Ascent is a native iOS app that prepares you for the CAPM, the entry certification for project management. I built it for my partner Miranda ahead of her exam, and it went live on the App Store in July 2026. It is also the clearest working example of a rule I build everything on: derive, don't ask.
The problem
CAPM prep was the usual suspects: PDF dumps, question banks with interfaces from 2011, subscription sites that gate everything useful behind a paywall before showing a single question. Miranda needed a real study plan, spaced repetition, and something that did not feel like punishment after a full workday.
Derive, don't ask
Most apps in this category open with a form: name, email, goals, experience level. Every question asked before any value is delivered is a dropout risk. Ascent opens into the product. It asks three real questions and builds a study plan from them, with no account and no email. Your goal is derived from your exam date, your readiness from how you actually answer rather than a self-assessment slider. The app never asks for what it can calculate, and it surfaces every assumption it makes so nothing wrong hides in a default.
How it teaches
Under the lessons is a spaced-repetition engine (SM-2): each of 1,122 questions carries a small memory model, and the daily route is computed every session from what you got wrong, not a fixed syllabus. Readiness is a four-factor score per domain, weighted by the real exam blueprint, that leans on your placement quiz early and on your behavior once there is enough of it. The questions span the four CAPM domains across 36 lessons in six formats, each with a written explanation of why the right answer is right and the others wrong. A timed Boss exam scores against the real pass mark.
The interface is the product
Ascent runs on Fundamental, the reciprocal-field engine behind this site. The entire interface is composited inside one running field: interactive elements are bodies that push particles, a correct answer throws a burst, and the field's density rises with your readiness and shifts to the color of the domain you are working. The ambience is a readout of your learning state, held to a strict frame budget so it never costs an interaction. The same palette, down to the hex values, drives the iOS app, the Android build, and the web.
Honesty as the design rule
The game layer (streaks, gems, a daily quest) is pointed at the deadline, not at time on device. The one thing gems buy is a streak freeze, and the full unlock is a single purchase with the first domain free. Every mechanic was held to one test: does it serve Miranda's exam, or a retention metric? Anything that only served the metric did not get built.
